Catherine Palace and Park, Pushkin

#1 of 2,127 in Parks in Russia
Located just a short drive southeast of St. Petersburg, opulent Catherine Palace and Park once served as the official summer residence of Russian royalty. Originally built on the orders of Empress Catherine I, the imposing palace underwent a massive reconstruction during the reign of her daughter Elizabeth, who spent exorbitant sums on grandiose Baroque projects. No expense spared, the building's facade and roof statues once contained over 100 kg (220 lbs) of gold. Now part of a World Heritage Site, the palace and its gardens represent the finest expression of Russian imperial architecture. The easiest way to explore this massive complex is with an audio guide, available at the on-site ticket office. Check online for opening hours and guided tour options. • We spent a pig time learning about this place for our 7 and 9 year old. Can I just say 11 million dollars dedicated to the Amber Room was amazing. Something like 50 rooms. Audio tour was excellent. I’...  more »
  • A chic park, near no less beautiful Alexandrovskiy with free entrance! There are no toilets in the park area, but there are cafes and restaurants!

  • Absolutely fantastic building and gardens where you could spend the whole day exploring the wonders of the Palace and garden. We only had a few hours but our guide made sure we saw what was most important. The Amber Room in the Palace is amazing but there are guards everywhere and you are not allowed to take photos. The gardens are beautifully landscaped with a small lake you can walk around. A visit we will never forget.
  • This place is extremely amazing. I am in great awe of how lovely and meticulous the design as well as the restoration was. My local tour guide was Olga and it was so lovely. The great room known as the bright room was breathe-taking. And please looked at the Amber room. So amazing, took 10 years to restore it.
