Saleaula Lava Fields, Savai'i

Created during the devastating eruption of Mount Matavanu in 1905, Saleaula Lava Fields are the remains of five villages buried under a wide lava flow. Dotted throughout the barren fields are half-submerged remains of churches and houses. Look for the Virgin's Grave, the resting place of a nun who was encircled by the lava flow, where brightly colored flowers grow today. Follow the lava flow to the ocean and explore rock pools teeming with fish.
