El Torcal de Antequera, Antequera

#1 of 1,169 in Wildlife in Spain
El Torcal de Antequera offers impressive views of an expansive stretch of dramatic natural rock formations. Limestone from the Jurassic era remained here after the prehistoric sea dried up. The formations left behind now have names: the Sphinx, the Jug, the Camel, the Screw, and more. Keep an eye out for wild roses; orchids, of which there are 30 varieties in the park; and wildlife, such as the Andalusian mountain goat. Scenic viewpoints are accessible from all the hiking trails. As long as it’s not one of the busier weekends of the year, you can take your car all the way to the upper visitors’ center. • El Torcal National Park was visited by rented car. Arrived in the morning, at 10 o'clock, there were almost no cars in the parking lot, and there were few people. And when they left, they didn't see any empty parking spaces. Cars were put on the side of the road, not reaching the park. We chose the average for complexity of the path - green, passed it in two hours. The rocks here are incredible beauty, breathtaking! Several times during the route we saw mountain goats, which seem to be used to people and are not very afraid of them (and we thought that we would see...

  • I love going early in the morning when it's all quiet because then you can't take advantage of the silence. There are many Montes goats and I love it. I also saw a fox. The site is spectacular and have very good guides to visit the Torcal. I have to go back to the observatory.

  • Simply loved it! I've already been twice and will go many more times. It's simply incredible what nature is capable of, and this site is a clear example. There are various routes and paths to follow, depending on how fit one is. There's also a cafeteria to have a nib and vending machines for refreshments. I would also recommend nocturnal visits to the observatory, on site, where an astrologer explains the formation of constellations, the different planets, which you can even see through an amazing telescope. It's 9 euros, and completely worth it!
  • Nature is the best sculptor. Rainwater has shaped these rocks and it is up to your imagination to align them with real existing images. Avoid to visit on weekends and try to get their in the morning (10 a.m.). But carry a sweater. It is fresh up there.....
