Cathedral de Santa Maria, Murcia

You can merely stare at the ornate facade of the mixed Baroque and Gothic Cathedral de Santa Maria and come away feeling satisfied. But inside the 14th-century cathedral sit three intricately detailed chapels, which are not to be missed. Of these, the Chapel of Junterones owns a reputation as one of the Spanish Renaissance's finest. Head up the iconic 90-m (300-ft) bell tower, where some 25 bells toll. Beneath the main altar lies the heart and entrails of Alfonso X, the medieval king of Castile, León and Galicia. • Admission costs EUR 5 if accessed during hours of worship, from 10:00 to 17:00 h and includes the cathedral museum. Then it's free. It's not the most impressive cathedral, but it's interesting. The tower is not visitable at the moment, I was told that they will publish soon on the web when they will open it to the public.

  • We loved this cathedral. I recommend visiting her if you are in town. At noon it is closed, like many other activities in Murcia. But only to see the main facade with its three accesses and its multiplicidyde of images is worth it. It is superb and rescues many architectural movements on its journey.
