#2 of 19 in Historic Sites in Polonnaruwa
See the ancient structure of Polonnaruwa Vatadage, built to hold a relic of the Buddha's tooth and the alms bowl he used. At the center of the circular building with concentric terraces, you can see a seated Buddha. Belonging to Polonnaruwa period, the most striking stone work in the monument comes from guard stone and moonstone. Historians believe ornamental elements at the monument's entrance represent the cycle of Samsara in Buddhism. Spare a though for the many local people who have managed to preserve the site in near-perfect condition. • The Vatadage at Polonnaruwa is the most famous. It's one of the greatest architectural design of ancient Sri Lanka. Its believed to have been built during the region of Parakramabahu. On the centre is a small stupa and on the four sides, there are beautifully carved Buddhist statues. Four sets of beautifully carved stone stairs lead to the upper level from four side.
  • The polonnaruwa vatadage is an ancient structure dating back to the polonnaruwa period of Sri Lanka. It is believed to have been built during the region of King parakramabahu 1 to hold the relic of the tooth of Lord Buddha. The vatadage at polonnaruwa is most famous. An incredible work of art and architecture from polonnaruwa, giving a view of what a complete vatadage would actually have looked like.
