Calshot Harbour, Tristan da Cunha

Calshot Harbour represents one of the most important places on Saint Helena. The harbor, built in 1967, got its name from a village in England. Take a panoramic turn around to see the small and colorful fishing boats departing or arriving. Export of fish is important for the island's economy, which makes this harbor a crucial spot. Take in the sea air and learn about the region's fishing business here. • Ended up on a cruise, yes I work there, that actually had Tristan Da Cunha as a stop in the schedule. Nobody really thought this out as less small cruise ships don't stop here, the port/island can't.....  more »
  • A place I always wanted to go to. The remotest inhabited island in the world. We were the first ship there since november. We toured the island walking to where the lava stopped in 1961 and then...  more »

  • Meh, Average docking experience. Got a lot wetter than I had planned, which subsequently caused me to be the only shirtless and pantless guest at the albatross that night. I hadn’t planned on causing a scene, but the flamboyant and lovely barkeep named Sebastian, let me throw my wet clothes in the dryer down stairs. In the meantime a local, named mad-eyed-Pete offered to take me back to his place for the night to “warm up.” Initially I thought he was joking but before long it was apparent that old Petey was on the prowl. I don’t kiss and tell but... It was a long night. Next day back at the harbor, I found my boat had been completely stripped. Engine, fuel tank, electronics, seats, glass, you name it, it was all gone. Needless to say I got the heck out of there, hitching a boat ride back to Cape Town with some Somali pirates. Learned how to swab the poop deck, and the true meaning of bow and stern. Just glad they didn’t make me walk the plank!
  • Good place to be. One of the remote harbours on earth.
