Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan, Chiang Mai

Admire the traditional design and reverential atmosphere at Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan, a Buddhist temple located in Chiang Mai's historical center. King Saen Muang Ma initiated construction in the 14th century, intending to bury his father's ashes here. The project wasn't completed until the mid 15th century, and since then the temple has been rebuilt, refurbished, and redesigned on numerous occasions. Originally three separate temple areas, the sites were joined up to create the place of worship you see today, making it an area of impressive scale as well as architecture. Visit the grounds to discover its interesting and volatile history; look for the replica of the famous Emerald Buddha once housed here and the city pillar surrounded by three dipterocarp trees. • A magnificent, not to be missed temple complex. It costs 40 baht to get in. Lots of signs about suitable attire but I had shorts on and no one seemed to mind. The centrepiece is a huge wat, the biggest I've seen, adorned with elephants and the obligatory Buddha's. It is very imposing. There is a lot else to see as well. I was most impressed.
  • A must see! Amazing, it was built late 1300's and was damaged by an earthquake in the 1500's and still stands an impressive figure. You can also see the city pillar there which when built was believed to mark the epicenter of the city and the center of the universe. Only men dressed appropriately can enter the pillar as it is believed that social unrest will befall the city if women or I'll dressed men enter it. Giant gum trees for protection and a massive reclining Buddah. Great way to spend time and learn in an amazing city
