Wat Pha Lat, Chiang Mai

4.7
Wat Pha Lat, which means “Monastery at the Sloping Rock”, was originally used as a resting place for people walking up to worship at Doi Suthep. But once the road was built in 1935, making Doi Suthep much more accessible, Wat Pha Lat in turn became a monks’ residence.

The temple complex is incredibly peaceful, beautifully blended in the nature and barely anyone else goes there.

The temple is located on the side of a mountain and borders a large waterfall. Structural elements of the temple are scattered among the trees of the mountainside as small Buddha shrines and images of various mythological creatures.

  • Visiting this temple was part of the Sunrise tour, temple Suthep Doi. Wat Pha Lat has such beautiful, peaceful & natural surroundings. There are many stunning sculptures also. A special place indeed.  more »
  • Our stopped at Wat Pha Lat on the way to the bigger pagoda and we are glad he did. I enjoy the older and more plain areas to the gold and tourists. Worth a stop and visit to see a little bit of...  more »

  • Excellent trail in the forest leading up to the temple. It took us about 30 minutes at a reasonable pace. The trail is well traced, there is no chance to get lost. We read that it was best to wake up very early to avoid the heat. We did it midday and we were fine. Being in the forest, you avoid the sun anyway.
  • Pretty steep climb so be in proper attire. Other reviews seem to say paths are indicated by plenty of yellow robes/cloth but only saw a few. Having gps to keep track of direction just in case is recommended. Climbed in December where the air is cold and the sun wasn’t too bad as the trail is shaded most of the parts. Good hike but not for people who don’t like hiking.
