A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Step out of the city life by going to Atherton Tablelands and Shark Diving. Relax by the water at Trinity Beach and Palm Cove Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Spas (in Palm Cove), Port Douglas (Opal Reef & Agincourt Reef) and Australian Butterfly Sanctuary (in Kuranda). Next up on the itinerary: get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour and identify plant and animal life at Mossman Gorge Centre.

On the 30th (Wed), stop by Alice Springs School of the Air Visitor Centre, identify plant and animal life at The Kangaroo Sanctuary, then examine the collection at Royal Flying Doctor Service Museum, then identify plant and animal life at Alice Springs Reptile Centre, and finally identify plant and animal life at Alice Springs Desert Park. Founded as a military outpost in 1826, Albany is the oldest town in Western Australia, just barely gaining this title by being settled two years earlier than Fremantle and Perth.
Kick off your visit on the 4th (Mon): see the interesting displays at National Anzac Centre, explore the striking landscape at The Gap and Natural Bridge, then get engrossed in the history at Albany's Historic Whaling Station, and finally see majestic marine mammals with a dolphin and whale watching tour. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: kick back and relax at Greens Pool, enjoy the sand and surf at Little Beach, then enjoy the sand and surf at Emu Point, and finally tour the pleasant surroundings at Middleton Beach.
