The gateway to one of the largest monastery complexes in Greece, the small town of Kalambaka nestles against a landscape of imposing rock formations rising 400 m (1,300 ft) into the air. Nearly leveled during World War II, the town rebuilt and reinvented itself in the post-war period, quickly becoming one of the region's major travel destinations.
On the 5th (Sun), look for gifts at Meteora Sandals (Ekfrasi), contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Meteora, take in the spiritual surroundings of Monastery of the Great Meteoron, then admire the natural beauty at Varlaam Monastery, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada).

Traveling by car from Athens to Kalambaka takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. In May, Kalambaka is little chillier than Athens - with highs of 26°C and lows of 11°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Sun) early enough to travel to Elafonissi.

Do a combination of train, flight, and shuttle from Kalambaka to Elafonissi in 10 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and ferry; or do a combination of bus and ferry. Traveling from Kalambaka in May, expect a bit warmer with lows of 19°C in Elafonissi. Cap off your sightseeing on the 6th (Mon) early enough to catch the shuttle to Heraklion.
