Known as one of the greatest small cities in the world, Amsterdam charms visitors with its cool and cozy atmosphere.
Get some cultural insight at Rijksmuseum and Zaanse Schans. Visit Anne Frank House and Canals area for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Amsterdam: The Hague (Escher in Het Paleis (Escher in the Palace), Panorama Mesdag, &more) and World Heritage Kinderdijk (in Kinderdijk). There's still lots to do: wander the streets of The Jordaan, pause for some serene contemplation at De Duif, examine the collection at Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Portuguese Synagogue.

Visiting Ile Saint-Louis and Île de la Cité will get you outdoors. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Eiffel Tower and Basilique du Sacre-Coeur de Montmartre. Get out of town with these interesting Paris side-trips: Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte (in Maincy) and Chateau de Pierrefonds (in Pierrefonds). Step off the beaten path and head to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and IWM Duxford. Get some historical perspective at Wallace Collection and Battle Abbey and Battlefield. You'll find plenty of places to visit near London: Oxford (Pitt Rivers Museum, Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, &more), Dorchester Abbey (in Dorchester-on-Thames) and Duxford 14th Century Chantry Chapel (in Whittlesford).
