The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Nara Park and Tofuku-ji Temple. Do some cultural sightseeing at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Toji. Step out of Kyoto to go to Nara and see Nigatsu-do Temple, which is approximately 1h 10 min away. There's much more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, make a trip to Eikando Zenrinji Temple, steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and stroll through Nanzen-ji Temple.
