Castle of St. Peter, Bodrum City

Learn about fascinating archaeological finds from under the sea at Castle of St. Peter. Built in 1402 by the Knights of St. John, the castle is now used as the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. After a long history of attack without defeat throughout the 16th century, the castle was surrendered to a sultan during an attack in 1522. Today the museum is the largest of its kind, hosting artifacts of glass, bronze, clay, and iron. Check out the inside garden within the castle, move on to the tomb of a Carian princess from 325 BCE, and finally be amazed by the reconstructed shipwrecks from the 11th and 14th centuries. The castle draws visitors with a variety of interests--from ancient architecture, to Turkish history, to archaeology. It is also referred to as "Bodrum Castle" or "Petronium."
