Trip Planner: Europe / Turkey / Turkish Aegean Coast / Izmir Province / Selcuk / Bibliotheque de Celsus
Standing on its nine-step platform, Bibliotheque de Celsus was first built in 117 CE as a mausoleum for Roman senator Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus. The two-story facade, which features three pairs of Corinthian columns, resembles the portico of an ancient Greek theater. The richly decorated library was destroyed in a fire in 262 CE, but was restored to the original design during the 1960s and 1970s. Note the statues in the niches between the doors, modern copies symbolizing wisdom, knowledge, intelligence, and virtue. The niches on the interior walls at one time held the scrolls of 12,000 manuscripts. Bibliotheque de Celsus Reviews
The view is truly breathtakingly beautiful. I will advise a word or a few of caution: watch your step! Getting here along the path can be slippery on some of the more polished stones. more »
Грандиозная библиотека, бывшая и гробница (что очень и очень не обычно) греки и римскому политическому деятелю (эпохи Веспасиана) Тиберию Юлию Цельсу. Со знаменитым врачом и учёным лучше не путать). It is better not to confuse the famous doctor and scientist). The library (already under Adrian, 113-117) was built by Cels' son, Aquila, according to his will and his money. When in 1904 the Austrians unearthed Ephesus (so, by the way, the original statues in Vienna, here plaster copies) found his unplundered (!!) sarcophagus under the reading room. The library is the most restored and impressive monument of the archaeological area of Ephesus. With 12,000 scrolls stored here, Wikipedia calls it the second largest library in the Ancient World. But the books, as well as the library itself, burned the Germans. This time the vandals were goths.
