Penrhyn Castle (National Trust)
The mammoth 19th-century neo-Norman Penrhyn Castle (National Trust) offers opulent furnishings inside and a spectacular natural setting outside. In the halls, see a 900 kg (1 ton) slate bed made for Queen Victoria, elaborate carvings, plasterwork, and mock-Norman furniture. The castle also has a large collection of paintings that you could spend hours gazing at. The restored kitchens are a hit with visitors, and the stable block contains two museums: one for industrial railways and another for model railways. Outside the buildings, be sure to explore the surrounding parkland, exotic tree and shrub collection, and enchanting Victorian walled garden. Wonderful experience today, my first day of voluntary work at Penrhyn Castle. So glad I went - the house is stupendous, and I met a lovely team of workers there who were warm and welcoming and full of fascinating information about the history of the place. Lots of fun events and creative activities happening there soon, I gather - and I would so like to be a part of it all!

Large, impressive but relatively new castle. Interesting interiors, ceilings, clocks, art, china etc.. Children's play area. Nice shops & cafe. Excellent free parking. Particularly fine collection of old steam engines.
