Natural History Museum · Art Museum
The clean, crisp interior of Ulster Museum is contained within an elegant building close to Belfast’s city center. Highlights of the extensive collection here include relics from the Spanish Armada, nearly three dozen Sir John Lavery paintings that the famed Irish portraitist donated himself, and works from maritime painter Kenneth Shoesmith. You'll also find archaeological items dating to the Stone Age, militaria, and items from world cultures across the globe such as samurai armor and war canoes from the Solomon Islands. Check out the exhibits telling the natural history of the island of Ireland through taxidermied mammals, wildlife, and 100,000 preserved plants and fungi including mosses, ferns, and lichens. In addition to free admission, the museum offers a free daily welcome tour (except Saturdays). Check the website for a schedule. Plan a Belfast trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • Please come here with your family. You won’t be disappointed. There are exhibits for everyone and the banter in the gift shop is world class. Would highly recommend.  more »

  • Very interesting throughout, however not that many one off wow pieces but the collections are interesting and informative. Very well put together museum if you want to know Ulster history. The wow section I found in this museum was the Game of thrones tapestry and the iron throne chair woven by a master basket maker who also hand woven the three giant dragons displayed centre of the Ulster main museum. lovely cafe and gift shop.
  • Interesting museum with plenty of things to see. The wide range of topics covered makes it a great first impression of different subjects for kids. And, it's free of charge, but it does rely on donations from the public.
