Trip Planner: Europe / UK / Wales / South Wales / Torfaen / Blaenavon / Big Pit National Coal Museum
Explore the underground world of a working coal mine at Big Pit National Coal Museum, dedicated to operational preservation of the Welsh coal-mining heritage. This is no ordinary "theme park" tourist attraction, and the pit props and steel bands are not for show, but for holding up the mine’s roof. The water flowing down the tunnels toward the cages is real, apart from the fact that, unlike a century ago when it splashed all over the miners’ feet, it now flows down purpose-built channels. Safety measures are strictly enforced and explained to visitors before each tour. Automatic gas monitoring systems are discreetly positioned around the tunnels, as are emergency telephones. Special talks and exhibitions are also regularly hosted by the museum. Find out how to plan Blaenavon trip without stress by asking Inspirock to help create an itinerary.

Their appalling working conditions in the coal mines and therefore their equally terrible living conditions, but also the weight of this economy in the development of this part of the United Kingdom are explained. You can also witness a stimulation and thus discover the dangerous machines with which humans extracted coal for nearly a century. In addition, I had the chance to visit the mine with a former miner. It was a rich experience, which transports you to total immersion! But watch your head!
An amazing place to visit. Lots to see. Very informative and on occasions very moving. Well worth seeing.
Delivered so much more than I expected. What an experience and insight into how difficult and dangerous working life was for those miners. Do not miss this museum
