Bolsover Castle occupies the hilltop site of a medieval fortress. The wealthy Sir Charles Cavendish bought the old fortress in 1612 and set about building the "Little Castle." His son, William Cavendish, inherited and completed the project. You can explore the luxurious result. Admire the exquisitely carved fireplaces, lavish furniture, richly colored murals, and painted ceilings. Investigate the nooks and crannies of the castle and make sure you visit the indoor Riding House, which dates back to the 1630s. Inside the Riding House is an interactive exhibition outlining the history of Bolsover Castle, including information about a banquet held there for the king and queen in 1634. Pick up an audio tour headset (there are versions for children and adults) for more information to guide you through the site. The cafe serves hot and cold meals, but you are welcome to bring a picnic along. Outside you can unwind by the gentle fountain in the walled garden, or venture further from the castle, where there is ample room to run and play. This was an unexpected delight. The 3 parts to the site were all interesting. The equestrian hall was unusual and the rooms in the main building spectacular. The audiovisual guide was was excellent. Just the right amount of detail. There were lots of activities and room for children. Cafe was also good. Would recommend.

A very spectacular castle. Plenty to see. There were children's activities going on when we visited so even more to keep them occupied. The Keep is nice to explore with some rooms being heavily done up and some left alone, giving a real feel for the site. Plenty to take pictures of and the views of the surrounding areas are impressive. Will visit again if we're passing.
