With fine examples of both Norman and Gothic architecture, Chichester Cathedral stands at the center of Chichester. Founded in 1075, this edifice is the only English cathedral visible from the sea. Admire the free-standing medieval bell tower, the only one of its kind in England. Take a free guided tour, with no reservation necessary. If you prefer to see it on your own, you can follow a self-guided tour. Adventure trails for children will keep them occupied (within safe distance) while you roam the site. For a cup of tea and a snack, visit the cafe in the walled garden. Although visits are free, a small donation for the maintenance and preservation of the cathedral is appreciated. Most cathedrals I find more of a monument than a church but here the atmosphere is both prayerful and a glorious building. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful with a very personal touch. The cathe... more »
I never tire of visiting Chichester Cathedral. Maybe not the oldest or grandest cathedral in England, but still very atmospheric & inspiration place. I would heartily recommend the Lady Chapel for a quiet place to sit & pray.
We had a nice 20 minutes walking around the cathedral. It's quite beautiful in places and has a number of unique features such as the glass floor over the excavated Roman mosaic floor. The volunteers there are helpful, welcoming and friendly. There was an activity sheet for the children. The members of staff are likely to see you looking at something and point out interesting features as they pass you. There's a recommended donation of £5.
