Perched on the edge of the equally renowned Cliffs of Dover, Dover Castle awes with its sheer size, imposing architecture, and historical significance. This 12th-century construction is the largest castle in England and towers over the modern town of Dover as well as the site of what is believed to be a former Saxon town. A network of tunnels, thought to have been constructed during the Napoleonic Wars, exists under the castle. A visit to Dover Castle represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Dover tour itinerary planner to plot your vacation.

Dover Castle is run by English Heritage. The castle has an on site car park, but it is prone to be full and the next nearest parking is up the hill. There is a regular bus service though, so if you don't want to, or can't walk, you don't have to worry. There is something for everyone at Dover Castle. Visit the WWII war tunnels and the hospital, or the castle if you wish to delve further into the past. At the end of the war tunnel tour, there is a shop and rooms with more information plus a chance to try on a few of the clothes worn during the war. But don't spend all your money in this shop - there is another by the castle and they both sell different things! The tunnel shop sells war related items, and the castle - well, you've guessed it! I'd recommend taking a packed lunch as the restaurants are really expensive. Make sure you give the whole day over to vising here - there is a lot to see - including the fabulous views of the harbour. Finally, the castle has event days during the year which are great for taking your family to. Be aware though, discounts don't apply on these days and English Heritage members may have to pay extra.

We have wanted to see this castle for years. Catching the ferry to France never left us time. This year we made an effort to arrive a day earlier than the planned crossing and were fortunate enough to go to the castle whilst there was a Roman enactment. Quite a long day visiting the passageways, rooms, tunnels, etc. Very interesting exhibitions about soldiering. Roman day superb. Good food as well.
