Regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, Durham Cathedral was founded in 1093 to replace an earlier church, which housed the shrine of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. Today, the cathedral’s treasures include relics of Saint Cuthbert, the head of Saint Oswald of Northumbria, and the remains of the Venerable Bede. The cathedral’s library contains one of the most complete sets of early printed books in England. Stop by for a daily Church of England service, or climb the cathedral’s iconic central tower, rising to 66 m (217 ft) and offering sweeping views of the city and the surrounding area. The cathedral is definitely the gem of our little city, makes you proud to live here. Such a beautiful building, so well looked after and maintained. Climbing to the top of the cathedral is definitely something you need to do, the views are just breathtaking♥️. The inside always reminds me of my childhood, me and my grandma always used to come here to have a look around and then sit in the lovely little cafe, best memories🥰.
This is an absolutely gorgeous Cathedral with an immense amount of historical significance to Northeastern England. One could spend all day here simply basking in the beautiful architecture and reading about all of the people that made this place important. Well worth the visit.
