Chanonry Point, Fortrose

A good place for observing bottlenose dolphins, Chanonry Point serves as one of Scotland's major draws for ardent nature lovers. A narrow spit of land extending into a triangular inlet, this popular vantage point offers good photo opportunities throughout the year, though dolphin sightings increase during the warmer months. You can look for whales and dolphins any time of day, but the best light for serious photography happens in the late afternoon, when you can frame your shots away from the sun. Parking is limited, so consider walking here from the nearby town of Fortrose. To find out how to plan a trip to Fortrose, use our trip itinerary maker.

  • At what must be the tightest spot of the Moray Firth you can look across fast moving waters at Fort George, a worthwhile place to visit in its own right, however the magic if you are fortunate enough to see them are the feeding Dolphins. Not such a rare sight as you may thinks, but be patient and take a picnic with you to soak up the scenery :-)
  • Amazing to see dolphins in their natural habitat...seen at turn of tide. Get there a bit earlier than stated ..very popular lack of parking ..beautiful spot on the edge of a golf course. No toilets or cafe ..just giving heads up before you get there
