Visit Anglesey Abbey for a fine example of British country living. Existing for almost 1,000 years and changing over time, the house is a fine example of grandeur. In 1600 CE, Thomas Parker converted the priory into a Jacobean-style house. The house remained in disrepair until 1926 when Lord Fairhaven fully restored the house and garden to what you see today. The dining room remains as one of the oldest surviving rooms in the house, dating back to 1236. Meticulously maintained gardens span 46 hectares (114 acres) and contain numerous plant species. If you're traveling early in the year, check to see if the dates of The Snowdrop Festival work with your plans. After exploring the house and gardens, visit Lode Mill, a fully operational water mill containing 150-year-old components. A functioning mill has been part of the property's makeup for nearly 1,000 years. Really great place to visit. Huge gardens which are great to walk around. The house is absolutely brilliant and has great collections of paintings upstairs and then well restored downstairs. Lots of parking, which is free and a big restaurant/cafe, which, even on a busy day, was large enough to accommodate lots of people.
It was our first time visiting Anglesey Abbey and I don't think it will be our last. This place is lovely, with lots of meandering footpaths through the garden's. My husband had a look inside Lode Mill, but I didn't as there are a lot of steep steps but my husband enjoyed it. The mill wasn't working due to low water levels which was a shame. The house was gorgeous. If you are a fan of Dahlias, the Dahlia garden is a must as they are so beautiful. Definitely recommend a visit.
