National Gallery, London

4.7
National Gallery houses one of the world's best collections of western European art. You can find larger collections at other galleries, but the roughly 2,300 paintings here comprehensively cover major art movements from the 13th to the 19th centuries. You'll encounter numerous important works, such as Hans Holbein's The Ambassadors, Van Gogh's Sunflowers, and Constable's The Haywain. Take a floor plan as soon as you enter the gallery, and consider picking up a free audio guide that explains the significance of the works you'll see. A handful of different themes are available, including the Collection Tour, which provides commentary on more than 1,000 works, and a 60-minute tour of the highlights. The British public owns the art in the permanent exhibit, so admission is free. Temporary exhibits, however, have fees. The gallery also offers three venues for food and drink. • I always find something new here and I enjoy seeing the paintings that are like old friends. The cafe is great, too.  more »
  • Wonderful Museum, perfect, elegant and well organized. Inside there are works of art that you normally see on books of art or history. In every room there are benches or sofas to admire these masterpieces. The thing I liked the most was the fact that we could bring a lot to the pictures ... and be 10 cm from sunflowers by Van Gogh ... priceless!!! Very careful monitoring but not overwhelming. The respect and the peaceful silence reigned supreme. From returning. ...

  • I went with our 6 year old little boy today and we both had a lovely time, in particular all of the staff we came across were incredibly friendly and accommodating. On arrival the smiley lady doing the bag check told us about art workshops for children and duly directed us to the main info desk and within 15 minutes we eagerly began an activity centred around designing and decorating a white fabric glove a small a way to celebrate the signature symbol brandished so wonderfully by Michael Jackson, linking relevantly to the exhibition within the gallery. Our son loved the 90 minute session which began by researching the beautiful Tudor gallery on floor 2 and discussing the symbolism within many of the works. All in all a really fascinating visit and we will definitely head back there soon for more. The staff delivering the workshop were wonderful and developed such a rapport with the children and parents.
  • Really enjoyed my visit here today. Staff are lovely, and I enjoyed the paintings. This is a very busy gallery yet somehow the atmosphere was calm. Really pleasurable time. Disabled toilets available. Not enough gluten free food choices but overall a good experience. Look up on line for the exhibitions that may or may not interest you.
  • This place always delivers. I have been coming here over thirty years, absolutely love it. Endless rooms of iconic art, there is something for everyone. I often bring overseas visitors here. It also has a well stocked shop and a restaurant, which has a great selection of food available. But for me my trip ends with a cheeky slice of one of their delicious cakes and Earl Grey tea. If you love art definitely worth a visit, allow time, and enjoy exploring. I went to see the Monet exhibition, it fed my artist pallet.
  • What a magnificent place! There are so many wonderful paintings here. They've got a lot of Matisse, Van Gogh, Monet, and Manet paintings, so if you're into any of those, you'll definitely enjoy your visit. We weren't able to see all their exhibits, but the ones we did see were great. If you're visiting during summer, you'll be happy to know that they keep the place nice and cool, too. A nice retreat during the heatwave. The shops also have a lot of art supplies, so if you end up feeling inspired by your visit, they have everything you need.
  • Whatever your taste in art, you're sure to find something here which suits your "palette". Home to over 2,000 paintings, you can flit from room to room at your own leisure. Aside from the main Gallery (which incidentally is free entry), there is also the Sainsbury Wing which is where they normally hold large exhibitions and talks. I visited the Monet & Architecture exhibition here recently. There's also a shop where you can buy books on the Artists and Exhibitions, a refreshment area and plenty of seating around and about. Allocate a good part of a full day if you want to see it all!
