Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, London

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park is a local nature reserve and historic cemetery in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets within the East End of London. It is regarded as one of the seven great cemeteries of the time (now known as the "Magnificent Seven").

The cemetery opened in 1841 and closed for burials in 1966, since which and other land has been added to the park, including "Scrapyard Meadow".

It was originally named The City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery but was called Bow Cemetery by locals. The cemetery pre-dates the creation of the modern Borough of Tower Hamlets in 1965, and instead takes its name from the original, older and somewhat larger, Tower Hamlets (or Tower division) – from which the modern borough also takes its name. The historic parish boundary which defines the Mile End and Bromley-by-Bow areas runs north to south through the park, with Mile End to the west and Bromley-by-Bow to the east.

  • I am writing another review because I have looked at some negative reviews and would like to address some remarks. This is a safe place, I have been coming here nearly every day for fourteen years now day and evening and never experienced or heard of any problems. It is certainly not creepy or scary and if someone was robbed it must have been an isolated incident. This park offers everything one could want in every season of the year. I never tire of this place, I've met people who have become friends and many more who smile and wave. I see many mothers with babies and young children who enjoy the park and during school holidays the Forest School is a must for children to experience the wonders of the park. My thanks to the Manager and the lovely volunteers without whom the park would go back to its overgrown state that it was before the Friends of the Park took over management of the park. Also look out for the regular events from history to bat walks, there really is something for everyone.
  • A lovely and wild space amongst the noise. Some nice paths and generally well maintained. It has missing gates so it may actually hard for some people to enter. But a breath of fresh air for the area. Lovely
