Trafalgar Square, London

#31 of 3,647 in Things to do in London
One of London’s most recognizable landmarks, Trafalgar Square is a 44 m (145 ft) high monument bearing the statue of Lord Horatio Nelson, whose distinguished service during the Napoleonic Wars secured him a reputation as one of Britain’s most heroic historical figures. The square, built around the area formerly known as Charing Cross, marks the center of the city. A number of commemorative statues and sculptures are located on the square, with one plinth (statue platform) left empty in order to host regular art exhibits. The square is used for political events and community gatherings, and most notably is the center of the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. Try to make a photo stop here while you're in town. • Iconic space with cool lion statues and fountains. With the traffic circling around it, makes you feel like you're at the center of London. Definitely recommended for first-timers, though personally I don't go out of my way to see it, or for repeated visits - a little too much concrete for my tastes.
  • No much to say here... an impressive square that you must check out when visiting London. Apart from the statues and the museum, it's the atmosphere that makes this a unique square. Plus it's close to cool areas like Soho and Chinatown.
