Waterlow Park is a 26acre park in the south east of Highgate Village, in north London. It was given to the public by Sir Sydney Waterlow, as "a garden for the gardenless" in 1889.See Waterlow Park and all London has to offer by arranging your trip with our London tour planner.
The park is set on a hillside and offers views across the City of London. It has three ponds all fed by natural springs. The land has been laid out as gardens since the seventeenth century and contains many mature trees.
Lauderdale House which is at the edge of the park, is used as a tea room and for functions and arts events and is surrounded by formal gardens. It is a much modified very old timber framed house, dating back to the sixteenth century. None of the interior remains in its original state. It was the home of the notorious Earl (later Duke) of Lauderdale in the 17th century. There is a local tradition that Nell Gwyn, the mistress of King Charles II lived there at a later date.
The poet Andrew Marvell lived in another nearby house which was once within the bounds of the park. One of his poems is displayed on a bronze plaque in the park. Another house once within the park was the home of the architect Sir James Pennethorne.
It suffered years of neglect and vandalism but was restored with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It reopened in 2005 and is now managed by the London Borough of Camden.

Waterlow Park Reviews
We walked through the park to get to Highgate cemetery and ended up spending some time here. A lovely breath of fresh air after several hectic days in central London. Don’t forget some seed for the po... more »
Très joli petit parc dans le nord de Londres situé sur une butte (a « hill » en anglais). Autant dire que ça grimpe bien pour y aller depuis le métro, mais une fois atteint, c'est un vrai ravissement.... more »Very nice little park in north London located on a hill. Suffice to say that it climbs well to go from the subway, but once reached, it's a real delight. At this time of year, the majority of the flowers are hatched and this gives another face to this park. On the other hand squirrel side, we have not seen the tail of one (or the plume for these beasts ...). Probably too many people and too many dogs for them. The tour is quite fast but it's nice to take your time and stroll before heading to one of London's two famous cemeteries (they adjoin the park).
Really nice park with some lovely period landmarks and other features. Quite hilly though (I guess it would be, considering where it is), so not a great place for a relaxing walk, more a stomp up some stairs... Great views though
TOTALLY TRANQUIL HIDDEN PARK IN NORTH LONDON. IT'S LIKING HAVING A PERSONAL BIT OF LONDON TO YOURSELF. NO CRAZY DOG WALKERS. NO YAPPING DOGS. NO SCREAMING KIDS. SO MUCH SPACE. YOU DON'T EVEN HEAR LONDON TRAFFIC. WORTH THE WALK FROM ARCHWAY TUBE. JUST DON'T TELL PEOPLE. HA! ENJOY!!!
