Odiham Castle is a ruined castle situated near Odiham in Hampshire, United Kingdom. It is one of only three fortresses built by King John during his reign. The site was possibly chosen by King John because he had visited the area in 1204 and it lay halfway between Windsor and Winchester.ConstructionOdiham Castle was built on 20acre of land acquired from the local lord, Robert the Parker, utilising a modified bend of the River Whitewater. The castle, which took seven years to complete, had a two-storey stone keep and a square moat. There were also raised banking and palisades. Notably, the stronghold also had a domus regis or king's house.Scrolls held by the Public Record Office indicate that total expenditure between 1207 and 1214, when work ceased, amounted to £1,000 (equivalent to £11.4m in 2009).HistoryIn 1215 it was from either Odiham or Windsor that King John rode out to Runnymede, where he met the barons and attached his seal to the Magna Carta. A year later Odiham Castle was captured by the French after a two-week siege during the First Barons' War in 1216. The garrison of just 13 surrendered on 9 July 1216. At some point over the next 9 years the keep was completely rebuilt, possibly to remedy the damage done to it by the French forces. At the same time the mound on which the keep sat was raised by 5 metres and an inner moat surrounding the keep was added to the defences. Odiham Castle Reviews
Despite living fairly close by, west of Basingstoke, for many years and knowing the area fairly well, we had never visited Odiham castle before. Most of the original structure is there, or imagined... more »
The walk along the canal is very nice and there is always lots to see. I like the castle, but my daughters soon get bored, as there isn't a lot to see, but there is information there telling you... more »
A free to visit ancient ruins. It is located almost in secluded place in Odiham. It must be magnificent in its best times some hundred years ago. It can be seen that the walls are so thick built with no bricks but stones and cement. There is no roof at present but imagining it's full structure puts you in awe. It is conserved by Hampshire County. You can finish reading all the details and the castle within minutes then what? You can stroll alongside canal. You can see ducks, fishes and a lot of aquatic plants, berries, wild flowers to make you feel good. And yes be prepared not to get parking. We didn't see any pubs too and of course no toilets.
Nice little piece of English history. Not much to see or do, what you see in the photos is it but still a nice destination for a leisurely walk along the Basingstoke canal. Nearest (unofficial) parking is about a mile away or you have the canal boat hire center in Odiham which is about 2 miles away. Enjoy.
