Founded in 1067, The Great Hall remains a testament to almost a millennia of history. The castle houses one of the finest surviving medieval halls, where a replica of King Arthur's famous round table sits. King Henry III--born in the castle--added the great hall between 1222 and 1235, which stands as the only remaining interior part of the castle after Oliver Cromwell's destruction. Take advantage of the exhibition corridor behind the gift shop to learn more of the history of the castle. Stroll around Queen Eleanor's garden featuring plants with symbolic meaning in medieval times. The castle is accessible by train at Winchester station, a ten-minute walk, or by the Tower Street car park, a five-minute walk. Admission is free, but the castle trust gladly accepts donations on entry. Add The Great Hall and other attractions to your Winchester trip itinerary using our Winchester trip itinerary maker app .

The Great Hall Reviews
Definetly lives up to the name The Great Hall. Well worth the time to visit here. Lots of history. Queen Eleanor's Garden is lovely and very peaceful. Nice little gift shop also. more »
Maakt perfect deel uit van het historische Winchester. Mooi complex als je de stad binnenwandelt via de Westgate. Boeiend door zijn verhalen (ronde tafel...) en zijn geschiedenis. more »Is perfectly part of historic Winchester. Nice complex if you walk into the city via the Westgate. Captivating by his stories (Round Table...) and his history.
This place was fascinating, so much to learn. The table is supposedly the round table of Arthurian legend. But it’s not really. Interesting to learn about how the ancient monarchs tried to piggy back off the Arthur story to add to their own legacy. Lovely wee garden out the side too.
Fabulous. To see not only the legendary round table but also so much more including the origins of the fort in Winchester and the development into becoming the seat of Kings and the capital of England. This is all described in just enough detail to keep it interesting, not boring. There is the small restored garden with it"s topiary and the "Long Gallery"with much more background information. There is also a shop and toilets. Concession pricing. Opens at 10.00am.
