Stretching 27 km (17 mi) along the West Mesa, Petroglyph National Monument is one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America. It is home to thousands upon thousands of petroglyphs carved in volcanic rocks by Native Americans and Spanish settlers 400 to 700 years ago. The carvings are all outside and can be accessed via walking trails. Begin your trip at the visitor center, where staff will advise you on what walks are best-suited for you, as they vary in length and difficulty. Each route reveals an array of petroglyphs and the park's impressive natural features. The trails are not paved, so wear appropirate shoes.   • Nice park staff, ready to answer any questions and give helpful recommendations. 4 separate areas to explore. All free except a $2.00 parking fee at one. Have plenty of water with you. Not all areas have restrooms so be prepared. Interesting historical and cultural place.
  • Nice, easy hike. Definitely do it early morning or in the spring/fall. There is no tree cover and I imagine it is very hot during the summer. Lots of cool petroglyphs to see!
