Create an itinerary including Mirabell Palace
Built as a token of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich's love for his mistress, Mirabell Palace is perhaps best known as the backdrop of "The Sound of Music." The former palace was built in 1606 and now houses the offices of the mayor and municipal council. The boxwood gardens contain mythology-themed statues from 1730, as well as four groups of sculptures representing the four elements. If you're a fan of "The Sound of Music," don't miss the horse fountain, where the von Trapp children sang "Do-Re-Mi." A stroll through the gardens will jog many memories from the film. • If you have visited good gardens across Europe then you may not find it as good as them. Just average.

  • We only briefly walked through the gardens here bit it was still quite a beautiful spot. If you've got time in Salzburg then definitely go visit, but if you're limited on time don't worry about missing it. On the plus side it's on the way to the fortress from the train station, so don't use the tram, walk through the gardens here instead, it's not a long walk.
  • The palace garden is beautiful, and very big. There are plenty of hidden areas so make sure you don't miss anything, because it is worth it! My favourite part was a botanical room with turtles and birds in it. You'll know you're near if you hear the birds chirping.
