Visit Paradesi Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in all the 53 countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. Built by prosperous members of the local Jewish community, then controllers of a large part of the world spice trade, the synagogue was completed in 1568. Learn the interesting history of the building and the community it has served for centuries, and admire the synthesis of cultures in its architectural design and customs. Several features both inside and out deserve close examination, including a 14th-century tablet installed on the outer wall, and an oriental rug given by the last Ethiopian emperor, Haile Selassie. • This is one of the staple stops of anyone visiting Mattancherry. This 450+yr old synagogue is one of the heritage sites of kochi. At a charge of 10rs per person, one can visit this place to view it's grandeur inside. From its beautiful hand painted tiles to its brass pillars Nd pulpit, this is a place filled with history even it's air. The clock tower and the decorative works inside the synagogue itself will take you back in time and give a sense of living back in the history of this place. The painting hall provides a historical recollection of the past events and ties with Jews in Kerala. A well worth of a visit for anyone. Sadly no photos are allowed.
  • This place of worship stands as a testimony to the secular spirit of Kochi & Kerala in general. Also called the Cochin Jewish Synagogue, this place has been meticulously maintained and as i was given to understand, Jewish families still offer prayers here. The photo library (at entry) gives a fair overview of the history behind the place.
