Tourbillon Castle is a castle in Sion in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is situated on a hill and faces the Basilique de Valère, located on the opposite hill. The castle was ruined in a fire in 1788. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
The Diocese of Sion was founded in Octodurum, now called Martigny in the early 4th century. In 589 the bishop, St. Heliodorus, transferred the see to Sion, as Octodurum was frequently endangered by the inundations of the Rhone and the Drance. Very little is known about the early Bishops and the early churches in Sion. However, in the late 10th century the last King of Upper Burgundy Rudolph III, granted the County of Valais to Bishop Hugo (998-1017). The combination of spiritual and secular power made the Prince-Bishops the most powerful nobles in the Upper Rhone valley. Sion became the political and religious center of the region. By the 12th century they began building impressive churches and castles in Sion to represent their power and administer their estates. Valère, as the residence of the cathedral chapter in Sion, was one-third of the administrative center of the powerful Diocese of Sion. In the 12th century the Cathedral Notre Dame de Sion (du Glarier) was built in the town below Valère hill. Glarier Cathedral became the seat of the Diocese of Sion, while the Prince-Bishop of Sion lived in the castle. • The view to both sides of the Rhone valley is very good. To think that people had to carry everything all that height up makes me thankful for my comfortable life.

  • Great tour from Cédric which really brought the history of the castle and the region to life. I would really recommend a visit - and the tour (super reasonably priced) is a must!

  • A truly spectacular view, along with the ruins of the castle. The climb up here is a little steep at times, but there are railings at certain points to guide you along. There’s quite a bit to explore and a great view to marvel at, so it’s definitely worth the climb. There are also guided tours available (11, 12, 3:30, 4:30). I spent about 45 mins at the castle itself (excluding the climb).
  • This castle ruins are amazing! Such a wonder of human engineering trough the centuries that still stands ,I can't imagine how greater it was on its prime! The view over the city from the castle is breathtaking you also get a great view over the other castle the path where you need to go to this castle also leads to the other one Parking sace is possible by underground parking so there is plenty space , for wheelchair access isn't possible since the castle access is made by stone stairs and half of rest of the path is small dirt trail. Please! Don't throw or leave trash and do not try to climb the ruins! I saw a drunk teenager who put himself in danger because he was trashed drunk !
