Silbury Hill is a prehistoric artificial chalk mound near Avebury in the English county of Wiltshire. It is part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage Site. At 39.3 metres (129 ft) high, it is the tallest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe and one of the largest in the world; similar in volume to contemporary Egyptian pyramids.
Silbury Hill is part of the complex of Neolithic monuments around Avebury, which includes the Avebury Ring and West Kennet Long Barrow. Its original purpose is still debated. Several other important Neolithic monuments in Wiltshire in the care of English Heritage, including the large henges at Marden and Stonehenge, may be culturally or functionally related to Avebury and Silbury.

  • Beautiful and awe inspiring prehistoric earthwork, dominating the landscape. Has an incredible profile from any direction, but probably best viewed from the west, as the backdrop is then all sky.

  • Although you cannot access the hill the parking is free and worth the stop to see a piece of history

  • Impressive to say the least. the labour hours involved and the earth moved just to make this happen were clearly immense and sitting on the bank looking toward this monument had me thinking about this aspect for a good while. Pretty special. It's large! Especially since it sits in a relatively flat landscape.
  • It was great as always. Probably because of winter time there weren't any grazing animals, I could let my dog round around, and she enjoyed it a lot. Parked up at NT parking for Avebury and walked to the hill. Some parts of the stones were closed up, and noticed ongoing works to make the paths less muddy.
